Is "a" the host and the domain is b.c.com? Or is the domain actually
a.b.c.com?
In the b.c.com domain, you have a DNS entry for "a" so when you ping
a.b.c.com it responds.
When you ping just "a" the server adds the domain that it is in, so it
translates a to a.b.c.com and you end up pinging the same thing again.
When you ping a.b., the server adds b.c.com again so you are really trying
to ping a.b.b.c.com.
Same thing when you ping a.b.c., you are really trying to ping
a.b.c.b.c.com.
I'm not positive this is the setup, but from your description this sounds
like what is happening. If the domain is actually a.b.c.com and not b.c.com,
then you probably have an entry in DNS for "a" which explains why you can
ping "a" which is really a.a.b.c.com.
