DNS expiration

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

2k3 domain, internal DNS on 2 DC's.

Clients (XP) can reach internal resources by hostname or IP.
Then after a couple of hours resources can only be reached by IP.
Hostnames no longer resolve. Pings to the hostnames resolve to the
public website.
ipconfig /flushdns or reboot fixes the problem, but what is the
permanent solution?

Seems as if only some clients are affected. No pattern to the time
before the hostnames expire.
Telling users to scrap the hostname and just use the IP isnt quite
cutting it.

I'm not good with DNS.....TIA for any help.
