Re: Stub zone and phantom CNAME

We have a stubzone for zone abc.com
One of the entries on the peoples DNS is for www for that zone.
Over the passed few weeks we have been getting calls from our
monitoring guys informing us that the website is unavailable
An NSlookup indicates that the www.abc.com is pointing to the the IP
of one of the domain controllers for the stubzone.
When we look under our cache we see a CNAME for www.abc.co.za which
points to the DC.
If we delete the CNAME in the cache everything starts working again.
We have gone through their DNS with a fine tooth comb and dont find
any such CNAME.
Where could this possible come from?
Your assistance is appreciated.

Sounds like this is a combination of a couple of factors.

Without the actual domain name to work from, I'm going to say their internal
domain name is abc.co.ca, correct?

Try removing the Stub zone, it should not be needed in this environment if
their internal name is abc.co.za and configure a custom DNS suffix search
list of abc.co.za, ONLY, basically removing co.za from the Suffix search
list.
Then, add an A record named www, with the actual IP of the website, to the
internal abc.co.za zone. This will probably fix it all.

If I could put money on this, I would say that their public DNS hosting
provider has a CNAME of www.abc.com pointing to www.abc.co.za, which has a
CNAME pointing to abc.co.za. These problems can also pop up if the public
hosting provider has a Wildcard record in the public zone. Without the
actual Domain names I cannot tell you exactly what you need to create
because there are so many ways this scenario can pop up.
