Re: New DNS Setup

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

We are wanting to configure DNS on a windows 2003 server which for
testing will also be hosting an apache website.

I have the appropriate mappings configured on my firewall and can
access the site via IP from the outside world. I have installed the
DNS service and configured a new primary zone named mydomain.net
(using my real domain name, obviously). I have created an alias
(CNAME) called 'www' I then entered the hostname of the dns server
in the fqdn field. Is this all I should need to input in order for
the hostname to resolve? Do I need other entries? I know about the MX
record for email but I am focused on just getting the site resolving
first. Do I need an A record or anything or is the single CNAME
record of www all I need?

CNAMES must point to an A record that has the IP of the server you are
resolving. If you are pointing the CNAME to the DNS server's host name, then
that is the IP the CNAME will resolve to, provided that host name has an A
record.
