Re: DNS dynamic update pending in DHCP

Guys he's asking a simple question here, why are the DNS dynamic updates
from the DHCP server sat on pending.
There are 3 possible logical reasons and another instance I've found
where this happens.
The first is within Active Directory you have to make sure the DHCP
server's account sits within the "DNSUpdateProxy" group. This is to
ensure the DHCP server can update DNS even though it is not registering
its own credentials as part of the secure DNS system. Check this group
contains any DHCP servers within your Domain.
The second reason is the DHCP server is not on your domain and its just
sat in a workgroup. If this is the case add the machine to the domain,
authorise it and then do the above step as well.
The last logical reason is the scope on the DHCP server that the client
is attached to needs to have the DNS options set to "Always dynamically
update A and PTR records" every time a lease is created or experied.
This is done by right clicking the actual scope, going to options and
then the DNS tab.
What I have found is even with everything up there alright the DHCP
server will still have trouble registering DNS entries after it has
dished out addresses and the entry will be sat on "pending" for
seemingly no reason. It COULD be something to do with not registering
clients that are not part of the domain such as foreign laptops,
printers etc because my DHCP server seems to want to register 90% of
these objects in DNS but then sit there and do nothing for the rest of
the 10%.
The problem is there doesnt seem to be any way of checking how long an
object has been pending for, or how long its going to take for the DHCP
server to get its ass in gear and actually complete the registration.
There doesnt seem to be a way to force through a pending entry via a
menu or any command either so I am usually left to force a DNS A entry
via a domain controller and just hope the DHCP server is smart enough
to remove this when the lease expires.
I'm not microsoft qualified but I think my answer is somewhat more
relevant to the issue this guy is having here... reading the question
helps.
Hope this helps levd.
