Recently I came across with a problem in configuration of DHCP server
as a proxy for DNS updates.
I need to force all DHCP clients to use DHCP server for dynamic DNS
updates. These clients include Windows XP laptops (most of them). I
configured DHCP pool to ALWAYS make updates at DNS for its clients
and disabled dynamic DNS registration on the clients.
Nothing happened. No updates initiated by DHCP server on behalf of its
clients. No records in DHCP debug log that could point to attempts to
make updates at the DNS. No records in the DNS log that connected to
DHCP server. Looks like this service just does not work. What could
be a source of this problem?
Let get an overview of the DHCP server, in the DHCP console, right click on
the server name, choose properties, on the:
DNS tab, select these options:
Enable DNS dynamic updates according to the settings below:
Always dynamically update DNS A and PTR records
Discard A and PTR records when lease expires.
Dynamically update DNS A and PTR records for DHCP clients that do not
request updates
Advanced tab: Click the "Credentials" button, and enter the credentials, for
a dedicated domain user account, with a non-expiring password. This account
needs no special privileges, it will be used by the DHCP server(s) as owner
of records, and all DHCP servers must use the same account.
These options:
015 DNS Domain Name
002 Microsoft Windows 2000 Release DHCP lease on shutdown. (0x1)
I also recommend reducing lease time to 1 day.
Keep in mind, the DHCP server uses the DNS servers listed in TCP/IP
Properties of you Network Interface Connections for DNS updates, it does not
use the DNS servers listed in the scope options for DNS updates. You may
also have to manually delete all current DHCP client A and PTR records in
DNS, so the user account can take ownership, and clear the "Register this
connections addresses in DNS" on the client TCP/IP properties.
