MadAdmin <MadAdmin@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> typed:
I've just built and windows domain with two DC's and two exchange
machines in a cluster. I named the domain contoso.com. The windows
domain is actually sitting behind a unix sys/ domain that will be
relaying mail to and from exchange with the same domain name
contoso.com. Problem is the windows domain thinks it contoso.com and
will not hit or relay to the REAL contoso.com,. so for example when i
try to send mail out from exchange although i specified the unix
smart host and i send a message to jon@xxxxxxxxxxx it automatically
comes back because it think its the real domain and says that address
is not available.

Is there a remedy for this? or do i have to blow everything away and
redo it with a different name. THANKS A BUNCH FOR THE HELP.

This is not a DNS issue, if Exchange thinks it is the only mail server for
contoso.com it has no reason to relay mail to another server.
If @contoso.com is the default e-mail domain, I don't know if this will
work, but right click on the SMTP virtual server, choose properties, select
the messages tab, in the field labeled "Forward all mail with unresolved
recipients to host:" enter the name (IP Address in [brackets]) of the other
mail server. I think this only works if @contoso.com is not the default
e-mail domain, and you have cleared the check box on the recipient policy
"This Exchange Organization is responsible for all mail delivery to this
address"
