At one time one of the machines did use a proxy but the other never did.

The only firewall is on the SonicWall. The machine that had the problem
starting today has no anti virus or anti spamware software on it.

On occasion people have reported "no such software" and then a few
days later found that there were AV or anti-malware programs running
which someone else had installed etc.

I can access web pages inside the firewall from both machines.
I double checked the firewall settings and neither machine is blocked for
any outbound traffic.

How about a simple test with Telnet (better is NetCat but Telnet is built
into
the systems) on particular ports:

telnet DNSName 80

telnet www.google.com 80
get / HTTP/1.1
<ENTER><ENTER>

Also trying the IP address if the above fails
216.239.51.104, 216.239.51.99

If you get a bunch of HTML or even HTTP errors you likely reach the web
server.

If the name fails but the address works you have pretty much proven that the
problem is DNS related.

If not you have more or less eliminated problems with a particular browser.

If ping works but the above fail then you have pretty much proven that it
is PORT specific (else TCP vs. ICMP but this is unlikely).
