Re: Dynamic DNS, DHCP and Unix

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

I have a couple questions...
I want to have AD DNS running with secure updates only. I have both
windows
and unix clients registering in AD DNS. However we are using serveral
different combiniations of DHCP servers. Some are unix based. Some are
CISCO
routers because of VOIP implementations. I assume the windows based
clients
will update their DNS records without issue.

Usually, but not always. Generally it is best to let (Windows) DHCP do
the updates.

What about the unix clients,
how can I get these unix clients and/or the DHCP servers (unix based
and/or
cisco router) to dynamically update secure records in AD DNS?

Either the computers must be domain (or trusted domain) members of the
update must be done by a (Windows) DHCP server which is a member of
the domain or can otherwise use "update credentials".

Only Windows 2003 supports update credentials (from Microsoft) but it is
THEORECTICALLY possible that a Unix DHCP could -- learn to -- do
this. I doubt there is one out there (yet) but if you find one please post
the
details.

Any help would be appreciated.

Modify things so that (at least) all of your NON-domain DHCP clients get
their address from a DOMAIN DHCP server which can do the secure updates.

It's the right thing to do even if the Unix services must go away.
