I know all too well what NetBIOS is used for and what all stops
working when it is blocked somewhere along the network. FYI, nobody
really uses Microsoft file sharing for legit reasons, and in the rare
instances when we do, we rather install open source FTP software as it
is far more reliable than your pathetic NetBIOS.
I don't know what planet you are on but I don't know anybody who uses FTP
for LAN file sharing. Who would want to constantly be downloading and
uploading files to make minor modifications.
NetBIOS has nothing to do with Microsoft file sharing, except that Network
Places uses NetBIOS name resolution to populate the computer browser
service. Disabling NetBIOS will not disable File sharing, it just basically
disables browsing in Network Places because it is a name resolution
protocol.
The basics of WINS is to allow Network Browsing across with multiple subnets
because most routers do not allow NetBIOS broadcasts to pass. In order to
get NetBIOS resolution between subnets you need WINS to populate Network
Places. You also have to keep in mind, disabling NetBIOS over TCP/IP also
disables WINS registration, that why you find the NetBIOS over TCP/IP
settings on the WINS tab.
Hence blocking
NetBIOS would effectively block all file sharing, mail exchange and
other resources used primarily by various unwelcome guests, while
still allowing for more standards-compilant alternatives that have
much fewer security flaws.
This is an absolutely false statement, disabling or blocking NetBIOS does
not in any form block file sharing, and I don't know where you got the idea
it does. Disabling NetBIOS only blocks Network browsing most people have
become so accustomed to using. It is easy to turn off NetBIOS resolution, it
would be almost impossible to re-educate people to change their habits of
browsing into Network Places by clicking their mouse to find their server
based shared files.
Just so you know, Microsoft File sharing uses Server Message Block (SMB) on
port 445TCP.
So do the world a favor, cut the crap and just shut up when you can't
answer the question asked, okay?
This type of language is no way to get the answer you wish.

I have a question about this statement, there is always more to learn:

So if browsing is not essential to sharing files, so is netbios
required for file sharing. (what mechanism does microsoft's file
sharing use?) I sort of thought all these, file sharing - browsing -
services, used netbios. So you're saying that file sharing could
occur without netbios. if it's not simple to explain, how about a
link.
Thanks
