Re: DNS server setup questions

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Its been a long day.

I am about to add my last client to the domain.

I decided to be drastic and eliminate any problem I could so I removed the
Linksys router altogether, and am using just the wifi router (as a router
now). I had to move it physically but didn't hurt my signal very much.

Bottom line is that I only have one set of settings now to deal with.

I am still concerned about the domain name. I followed the google you gave
me and it gave regedits to do on the client and server but even with a search
of the registry I couldn't find the unique entry updatetopleeldomainzones it
calls for, and there was no DNSclient subkey under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT

DO I have to make the registry entries and follow Q300684 in order to have a
domain with a single-label DNS name?

I have really simplified my network but that still may not be enough to
clear up the original problem.

PROBLEM IS THAT I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO CHANGE THIS. THE WIFI IP SHOWS UP
AS
A GATEWAY, BUT IS NOT CONFIGURED ANYWHERE ON THE SERVER OR THE LINKSYS.
ARE
THE WORKSTATIONS JUST PICKING THIS UP BECAUSE IT IS PRESENT?

No, they are either hard coded ot use it or getting it from DHCP

Notice that a DHCP client can ALSO have hard coded settings for
anything other than IP and Mask.

After removing a router, I did finally find it under my DHCP settings as a
router. Once I elimitated the setting it didn't show up on my clients
anymore.

Technically the above line is incorrect IF this is a router, since ONLY
the "outside" can be set by the ISP; the internal side of the Linksys
router must have settings compatible with the subnet of the other
stations on that same broadcast domain.

THE ISP PROVIDES THE CONNECTION THROUGH THE DSL MODEM. THEY THEN GIVE US
A
LIST OF SETTINGS FOR OUR STATIC IP, GATEWAY, DNS. IF I CHANGE THE ROUTER
TO
OUR INTERNAL (AS I SEE IT) SETTINGS THEN HOW DOES IT MANEUVER OUT OF HERE?
I
KNOW THIS IS KINDA AN IDIOTIC STATEMENT BUT I AM NOW GETTING CONFUSED.

You router is fine NOW, so just leave it. They cannot though force
you to use THEIR setting on YOUR side, (that is the LAN side of
the gateway.)

The router has (at least) two sets of IP settings: On that matches the
ISP network on the DSL/WAN side; another that matches YOUR
network on the LAN/internal side.

But yours are fine to leave it as is.
