Re: Cannot ping but can browse!

This is a fresh install of server 2003, I've installed SQL, VS.NET, Office &
Exchange Server. I've just installed some antivirus and anti spyware as well
but it wasn't working before I installed these.

I have the DNS pointing to the router first then the server itself (same as
the XP workstations which work fine).

A tracert shows it trying on the router address and failing.

Haven't implemented IPSEC, RRAS service not running, no third party
firewalls installed.

I'm running ie7 (I can't remember if it was working before I upgraded it but
it was initially). The IE Enhanced Security is currently not installed (I
tried with and without). I can browse through ie7 no problems.

I can't ping any external IP addresses including the external mail server.

Probably not a DNS problem but anyway.

I can ping all local addresses but no external ones on the Win2k03 server.
I can ping external ones from the other machines. I can browse from the
Win2k03 server with no problems. The Win2k03 server is a DC with AD.

It looks a lot like something on the win2k03 server is blocking ICPM
requests. The firewall is turned off (service not running).

Then it isn't likely blocking ICMP (other firewalls or IPSec
could do this but we must presume you mean that you have
turned off ALL such firewall type services.)

Generally the Basic (XP-like) firewall doesn't block a
machine (even a server) from MAKING and receiving
answers to ICMP requests -- only from answering them
when others ask.

This makes me highly suspicious that you have a third
party (personal) firewall running on this server (e.g.,
Zone Alarm, Outpost, etc.)

I've checked the router settings but it has been working and just stopped
for some reason.

Which DNS server does this server use? (It should
generally use the same one as the internal clients user
-- it is an INTERNAL DNS client too.)

All internal DNS clients must use strictly the internal
DNS server (set) which can resolve both internal and
external DNS requests.

When I ping external hosts, the host name is resolved but I can't ping the
IP address.

Then it isn't a DNS issue -- you say that DNS
resolves.

It is a routing or blocking problem in that case.

This stopping the Exchange server working.
Is there some other hidden firewall that kicks in on 2003??

XP-like, Basic firewall in RRAS, third party add-on firewalls,
IPSec filters.

These are NOT on by default and you should know about
any of them you have chosen to enable.

Are you talking about strictly problems in IE? The IE
Browser is locked down tighter on later releases of
Server.
