Re: strange dns client errors

Thank you for your feedback, some additional information:

- Client IP configuration:
DHCP enabled. . . . . . . . . . : Yes
IP Adress. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.42.0.140
Subnet Mask. . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.42.0.15
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.42.0.16
DNS Servers. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.42.0.16
10.42.0.23
Primary WINS Server. . . . . . . : 10.42.0.16
Secondary WINS-Server. . . . . . : 10.42.0.23

- There are no forwarders configured on both DNS Servers
- There are three correctly configured reverse lookup zones for the networks
10.42.0.0/24, 10.42.2.0/24 and 10.42.3.0/24.
- There is absolutly no host with an address 10.1.1.1, and a network that
begins with 10.1 is unknown. All networks are in the range of 10.42.x.x
- ICS was never configured on the network
- Both DNS Servers are not mulithomed
- DHCP is only configured on the server 10.42.0.16 for all scopes

Thank you in advance for any further help!

In news:OCYgBv%23BHHA.3496@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx,
Franz Schenk <franz.schenkNOSPAM@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> stated, which I
commented on below:
have a client that logs the following entries in the system Eventlog:

- Error, dnsapi, ID 11189
- The system failed to update and remove pointer (PTR) resource
records (RRs) for network adapter
with settings:

Adapter Name : {A6DAAEC7-1414-4DDD-AB46-FC3BAD966559}
Host Name : nb139
Adapter-specific Domain Suffix : example.domain.com
DNS server list :
10.42.0.16, 10.42.0.23
Sent update to server : 10.1.1.1
IP Address : 10.1.1.1

Has anyone a hint why the client (Win XP SP2) tries to update its DNS
records on the inexistent DNS Server 10.1.1.1? There is no machine
with this IP, and there is also no Nameserver or Host with this
adress defined in the DNS Zone!

Thank you all in advance for any help!
Franz

The 10.1.1.1 address looks like your router's address, if I'm not
mistaken, but not knowing your infrastructure, that's a guess. Is that
configured as a forwarder on your DNS servers? Are 10.42.0.16 and
10.42.0.23 authorative for the reverse zone or is the reverse zone
misconfigured? Was ICS ever configured in your network? DNS server
multihomed? Is DHCP turned on on your router?

Just a little guessing here because without knowing or taking a deeper
closer look at your config, it's difficult to tell.
