Re: DNS Server Just Terminated

In news:1162833052.521600.102940@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx,
Ninjak on FW <shawnn@xxxxxxxxx> stated, which I commented on below:
We have a Windows 2003 server that does SMB and DNS. It was running
fine for a few weeks since the last reboot, then all of the sudden in
the middle of the night DNS terminates. In the DNS log I see error
code 113, The DNS server could not signal the service "NAT". Followed
by "The DNS server could not initialize the remote procedure call". A
few seconds later I see from the application log that DNS segfaulted.

Any idea what could have caused this?

It sounds like this server is trying to run ICS (Internet Connection
Sharing) as well as DNS and probably DHCP as well. ICS and these services
conflict. If you want this server to be the NAT device for your office, I
would suggest to disable ICS and install NAT under RRAS.

Honestly, if this is a domain controller, I would suggest to not run NAT or
even have dual NICs because it will interfere with domain controller
activity and user authenticaiton and funcionality. I would suggest to
disable one of the NICs and purchase an inexpensive Linksys router to
perform NAT. Disable DHCP on the Linksys and use Windows for DHCP. Also only
use the internal DNS server (your server) in ALL of your machines' IP
properteis for proper AD functionality, or other issues will arise.

Instead of the website you're using, I suggest to use OEx (Outlook Express
or any other newsreader), and configure a news account, pointing to
news.microsoft.com. This is a direct link to the Microsoft Public
Newsgroups. It is FREE and requires NO ISP's Usenet account. OEx allows you
to easily find, track threads, cross-post, sort by date, poster's name,
watched threads or subject.
