Re: Registering Solaris 10 DHCP Client in Windows Server DNS

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Hi,

We have a Windows Server (I think 2003) and it leases an IP via DHCP
to a Solaris 10 client OK. I also configured the Solaris 10 client to
request a specific host name and this requested name shows up
properly in the Windows Server DHCP log. However, the client host
name is not being registered in the Windows DNS. To help diagnose, I
tried to do a manual registration to the DNS from the Solaris 10
client using "nsupdate". nsupdate reported "REFUSED".

Is there something we need to do on the Windows Server side to allow
the UNIX client to be registered in the DNS?

Windows Server 2003 added a way for its DHCP service to use a configured
username (DHCP server properties, Advanced tab) for making secure dynamic
updates in a ADI zone that allows only secure updates.
It is recommended to use a dedicated user account (no special privileges)
with a non-expiring strong password.
