Actually MS PSS doesn't recommend the use of the registry key. Best guess
as to why is that some layer of security in SMB signing or Kerberos is being
sacrificed. In any event, not sure why you couldn't rename the server
properly, but I would recommend the rename as the best long term solution
over the reg key any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Fantastic, this works. It concerns me though that i needed to use a reg
hack
to make this work. Surely this type of method is quote common amoung
organisations?

Hi all,
Here is my scenario. I have a Windows 2003 file server setup, and i have
given it a generic computer name according to our naming standards. But
this
server will be used for specific purposes, so the generic name will not
do. I
have created a DNS alias in tje hope that whenever you enter its unc path
into windows explorer, it will resolve and take you to the file shares
setup.
I can ping with this alias, and i can connect via remote desktop with
this
alias, but whever trying to go through windows explorer, i get a 'windows
cannoty find \\servername. Check the spelling and try again" error. How
do i
configure this?
Cheers.
