For sake of discussion I am using the ip range 192.168.1.1 which of
course is not the actual range with this problem.

Inside the Lan on any machine pointing to our DNS server which is
authorative for our domain and using nslookup I get the following:

Nslookup
192.168.1.1
Name: mail.exampleco.com
address: 192.168.1.1

and if I enter
mail.exampleco.com
Name: Mail.exampleco.com
Address: 192.168.1.1

And all is well with everything inside my lan.

Now if I am at home on Earthlink and I do the same I get different
results

192.168.1.1
Name: host1.1.168.192.exampleco.com
address: 192.168.1.1

and if I enter
mail.exampleco.com
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: Mail.exampleco.com
Address: 192.168.1.1

I need to understand why I am getting host1.1.168.192 and not an
answer like Mail.exampleco.com

Being authoritative for your domain does not make it automatically
authoritative for the reverse lookup because you own the domain and lease
the IP address from your ISP, the ISP owns the IP and reverse lookup.
Doing a reverse lookup on your own network for a PTR record in a zone you
created for a public IP is only good on your Network. When you are out on
the internet, the reverse lookup would not go to your local DNS unless the
ISP has specifically delegated the reverse lookup to you.
If you will post the actual IP I can investigate and advise you on what you
need to do if you want it delegated, or you can try to have your ISP create
the specific PTR. Some ISPs will some will not.
