Thank you for your response. This issue has been driving me nuts!
Yes the mail.externaldomain.com should point to a Local IP so what I
have done is added that to the Hosts file of the SQL Server that is
emailing our Internal Email Server. We do have an internal DNS Server
as well. As you said I'll have to create a new Forward Lookup Zone
because the email domain is different than the internal domain name.
I'll set that up and let you know if that worked. Do you have any idea
why my email is delayed? The SQL server successfully sends it and it's
received but it takes hours.
