Re: should I need WINS?

If you needed WINS before you will still need it after.
Here are the real rules:
You need NetBIOS (on ALL machines) if you wish to
support EITHER legacy OS clients (WinNT/9x) OR
if you wish to support legacy applications (which include
a surprising number of features like browsing, external
trusts, some Exchange and Cluster features/issues.
Most people need NetBIOS (really.)
You need WINS Server IF you need NetBIOS AND you
have more than one SUBNET.
If you use WINS Server then EVERY machine must be
a "WINS Client" on the NIC->IP Properties->Advanced->
WINS tab.

On a single Win Server 2003 / SP-1 network with 3 Win XP Pro and 2 Win
2000
Pro client workstations which are all on the same subnet, is there any
disadvantage to having a WINS server?

No particular disadvantage but no significant advantage
either. The key is that you have a SINGLE SUBNET.

And since you have only four machines broadcasts are
of no serious consequence, therefore you machines can
just broadcast to resovle NetBIOS names. WINS Server
is fairly irrelevant but would cause no problem.

The only conceivable disadvantages are that 1) you would
have to choose/work to install it 2) it might take a very
small amount of RAM and CPU and 3) [at least in theory]
it offers a possibly unnecessary component that might
have bugs (someday) which an attacker could compromise.

But WINS would be used on an internal Server so #3 isn't
much of an issue in real life.

On a Win Server 2003 domain controller, how does one install a WINS
server?

Start->Settings->ControlPanel->Add/RemoveComponents
->Windows components
