ok, so i just got it working by doing the exact same thing i tried the
other
day. i editted the header that was there and placed the alais word into
it.
problem solved. can't honestly say why this did not work before.

ok, i have opened up the old iis5 server and triple checked ALL settings

yet the CNAME worked fine when pointing to that old server. there is no
difference in authentication, ntfs permissions or website settings on ANY
tab. this is still not working. i am missing something somewhere else
maybe.

I am convinced there are subtle differences in IIS5 vs. IIS6
which may make a direct comparison ineffective for
troubleshooting.

Try these ideas:

1) Inspect your IIS logs -- attempt a connection and see the
result

2) Check event logs -- also consider turning on Logon auditing
to see if there is some type of authentication issue

3) Check your DNS thoroughly -- is this a public DNS server?
If so, give me the name that isn't working and let me check
it too.

4) IF (and ONLY IF) you have the authority: run a network
monitor and determine that the request is received as you
espect (probably not a useful suggestion but for completenes
again)

5) Are you using the "bare domain name" or the www.domain.nam
form? You must have the one (or both) defined in the IIS
properties of the site.
What specifically DO you have in the site properties Advanced?

6) I am still concerned about your DEFAULT PAGE settings --
you seem to have RECEIVED an answer, but the page was
blank. Had you failed to resolve the DNS or failed to reach
the web server you would have received (other) errors instead.
Check your default page settings; check your "index" page
name for a match etc.
You could easily have a blank Index.html and be set to that
instead of a "default.htm" or "default.asp" etc.

Another tact: Use NetCat* (nc.exe from the web) to simplify the
conversation with the web server and determine what responses
you are receiving -- problem the HTTP request is a bit complex
for your if you have never done this before (since a simple
connection will prove little and you really need to place the
HTTP request as a browser would.)

You could use telnet but it is sort of funky for good testing:

telnet cname.domain.com 80

Oh, another idea: create a setting for this web site using
a specific PORT number and see if the behavior changes.
Trying to eliminate or contrast variables. You can use
the "real name" of the web server on another port to see
if you get same or different results....

ok....so when i put the header in for the site it completely takes
the
site
offline. meaning just a white page.

There has to be other people out there that have IIS 6.0 and are
using a
CNAME record???

Sure, I do it. It works.

You have something wrong in the Site definition,
the default file name or settings, the permissions on
the actual files (NTFS), or the AUTHENTICATION
methods (unlikely since you get a blank screen but I
put this in for completeness since it is another common
problem -- easily created and easily solved.)

still looking for a fix here... everything i have tried takes the
site
out.

Hi thanks again for replying,
I have checked and there are no host headers specified, just the
default
ip
address and the tcp port 80. Should i be putting my cname in
there?

As I indicated you MIGHT consider trying it to see
if there is a difference.

thanks for the replies,

I am definitely missing something here then, the Default
website
does
not appear to have any host headers but how could i find out
for
sure? also, the Default Website is set to (all unassigned) for
the
IP Address, is this where i should be looking?

Click the "Advanced" button next to the IP IIS listens on to see
any
host
headers.
