We have an unusual setup with DNS in our network. Another
organization controls AD in our environment and most our pc's are
joined to this Domain. The PC's primary DNS server is a DC local to
our network. We have our own web presence on our network which
requires us to have Internal DNS so that we can resolve names for our
intranet servers. I have setup a standalone Win 2003 DNS server that
has Primary forward lookup zones that are transferred to the DC local
to our network. The zones on the DC are Secondary. The problem I am
having is that workstations periodically won't resolve hosts that are
in DNS on the DC(which is the Primary DNS server for all
workstations). It seems as though when the PC tries to do name
resolution, it will sometimes get an unknown host result. Then you
can do an ipconfig /flushdns (clearing the pc's cache)and it will
then get the right resolution. The question I have is wether or not
this setup is valid or not. Can you have a standalone server as a
Primary DNS server and a DC be the Secondary and expect it to work
properly? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, if both the preferred and Alternate DNS servers are capable of
resolving all domains. If, for instance, either the preferred or Alternate
DNS servers have zones that are not on both, resolution will be
inconsistent, at best.
