Hello,
Thank you for your post!
Please let me know if you have created two DNS servers or only one DNS
server on the parent domain.
I suggest you review the MS artilce 291382 below:
Question: How do I set up DNS for a child domain?
Answer: To set up DNS for a child domain, create a delegation record on the
parent DNS server for the child DNS server. Create a secondary zone on the
child DNS server that transfers the parent zone from the parent DNS server.
Note: Windows Server 2003 has additional types of zones, such as Stub Zones
and forest-level integrated Active Directory zones, that may be a better
fit for your environment.
Set the child domain controller to point to itself first. As soon as an
additional domain controller is available, set the child domain controller
to point to this domain controller in the child domain as its secondary.

| Quick little question...
| I have a domain (contoso.com) and have setup a child domain for
| it(child.contoso.com). i have my primary dns server RM1SRV1.CONTOSO.COM
| hosting both primary forward lookup zones for both domains. i can go into
| the command prompt with no problem and ping any computer on the network
via
| the host name. my question is how are the names getting resolved? when a
| client queries for a hostname on the primary server, does the dns server
| first look in the contoso.com zone, and if finds no match, then moves
down
| to teh child.contoso.com zone?
