Re: Can you remove DNS from the DC without affecting AD?

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Hi all,

We have two 2003 DCs. One is hosting DNS in an integrated zone, but
due to past history the DNS configuration is messy and giving numerous
errors.

Is it possible to simply remove the DNS service from this DC and
reinstall it? Will that give me a 'default' setup?? Will it clear out
the old date and start afresh?

Removing the DNS service does not remove the zone data, if the zone data
gets corrupted, you have to recreate the zone, regardless of the zone type.

If the zone data is stored in AD and the data in AD is corrupted you can
clear bad data from AD without losing all DNS data, such as manually created
records in DNS.
Here is the KB for doing this in Win2k, you can use pretty much the same
process in Win2k3. IN Win2k3, to change a zone to standard primary, simply
clear the check box, for storing the zone in Active Directory.

Make sure the changes have replicated to all DCs before placing the zone
back in AD.
