Hi Guys,

Many thanks for taking the time to respond.

"Round Robin" is enabled on my Windows 2003 Intergrated DNS server.
In a test my XP workstation points to this server for dns.

However when I ping the host (with multiple associated IP addresses)
It always returns the first one in the list.

Am I missing something?

Yes. Each client has a cache; any intermediate DNS server
has a cache. If you ping repetetively then any particular
client will use the same value from (client) cache.

If you even use NSLookup through another DNS server you
will see the same order due to Server cache.

And remember, the clients have Subnet prioritization (and servers
have netmask ordering) so even three clients on the same subnet
MAY show the same address due to these.

I know how to create a host name with multiple IP records associated
(two
A
records with the same name but different IP addresses) but I am finding
that
my DNS clients are selecting the first of these records and the other
is
never chosen.

Reason for doing this. I want mail that is destined to the internet to
be
split between my two SMTP servers for load balancing and fault
tolerance
reasons.

Is it possible? How?

Yes, that is essentially "Round Robin DNS", the default
but it can be overridden by either Netmask Ordering (on
the Server) or Subnet prioritization (on the clients.)

Those latter two features can be implemented WITH
Round Robin and will override it to choose the server
on the "same subnet".
