Server 2003 does not list own local shares when using it's alias

Hello - I have a Windows 2003 print server with a few hundred print
queues shared. Open security for Authenticated Users to print. The
server has an alias in DNS (separate server) that is simpler for users
to remember and works great for all users. (see notes below for
regedits required/applied on the print server)

The command 'net view <AliasName>' from any other PC/server with a
standard account (non-admin) provides a list of all shares on the host
print server. Running same command on host itself produces weird
results though.

>>From the server itself ...
(a) 'net view <IP Address>' produces list of all shares
(b) 'net view <ComputerName>' produces list of all shares
(c) 'net view AliasName' produces the error "System error 5 has
occurred. ... Access is denied."

Notes:
1) DisableStrictNameChecking has been added to the registry so the
server is "listening" for the alias name.
2) A separate server running Windows 2003 is experiencing the same
issue but instead has the OptionalNames regkey added. All other
settings and symptoms identical.
3) A third server running Windows 2000 has the
DisableStrictNameChecking regedit and will list its shares locally when
using the alias name.

Any tips or suggestions appreciated. Online searches haven't panned
out so far. Thanks.
