* Can you do an nslookup on those hosts that you can ping by IP but not by
hostname? It's going to be a different problem if their A record isn't
there at all, vs. their A record is there but you still can't ping by it.
* Are you having trouble pinging the fully qualified domain name, or just
the short name? In other words, does 'ping server1.company.com' work, but
not 'ping server1'? Or can you not even ping the FQDN on the problematic
hosts?
* Is there any other unifying element between those machines you can ping
by hostname vs. those you can ping by IP only?
