If you click on the mapped drive and it asks for a password, then the logged
on user does not have "access this computer from the network" rights in the
local policy for the logged on user at the client trying to access the
server.
If the file server is not a member of a domain, you will need to create
local user accounts with the same name and password for each user accessing
it.
Did you actually use ping \\fileserver?
Try ping fileserver
If the file server has a firewall enabled blocking ICMP packets you won't be
able to ping it.
