Understanding DNS Resolving

I am having a problem understanding how DNS resolving works. I have 2 DNS
servers setup and working fine for our internal domain. Our public DNS &
our website is hosted by a provider and is external to us. I currently have
OWA published and working just fine. ISA server is currently using a hosts
file which points to the internal Exchange server.
My internal DNS domain zone = domain.local
My external DNS domain zone = domain.com
If I use nslookup my internal DNS server resolves the internal IP of my owa
server as I have defined it in the new zone (webmail.domain.com) But if I
ping webmail.domain.com from a client machine which is set to use the
internal DNS Servers, I get the external IP address published by our
provider.
Why is this?
