Setting the DNS server to automatically scavenge stale records is usually
all you need to do. Manually created static records should have no Timestamp
and won't be scavenged, dynamic records will be reregister and have their
timestamp updated and should not be scavenged either, provided the record is
regularly updated.
Even if the server has a static IP it will still update its records,
computers that have reservations will still have to renew their IP lease and
should update their records then. If you will make the IP lease time
slightly less than the scavenge period will keep the record from being
scavenged. For instance if scavenging is done after seven days, set the IP
lease to six days.
DHCP can register records for any client regardless of the OS of the client,
e.g. my sons Xbox has its IP registered by DHCP so I'm sure it won't be a
problem for DHCP to register your Linux and Mac machines. If these have
static IP addresses, give them a reservation so DHCP can register them when
they renew their IP lease.
