Apologies for the confusion.
After rereading your question I see the confusion. I suppose I am using
the wrong terminology. I didn't mean a host file that sits on a client
I meant a host file that sits in a zone in a DNS. E.g. Say you are
working with your DNS MMC. When you right click in a zone you have the
option to add a "New Host..." I assumed it this was called a host file.
When i said I have "the same host file" what I really meant to say was
I have two host settings in two different DNS (one local, one external)
that point to the same server. The Host setting in the local DNS will
resolve to the server however the external DNS won't resolve to the
host.
Also to clairfy we have two different DNS setups. One the resolves DNS
queries for the internet (the external DNS) and one that resolves
internal DNS queries for our LAN (local DNS).
We use a PIX firwall and I have opened up port 80 on the server and I
have a static mapping from the external NIC to the internal NIC.
Thanks for any help with this as I am stumped.
