In answer to your questions:
The name of my dns zone is cinco.appdancer.com and it allows dynamic updates.
The AD namespace starts at cinco.appdancer.com; the server (codai) is the
forest root for the domain (it is the only dc I have).
The _msdcs.gc folder did not exist. I ticked the gc box and rebooted my dc.
The _msdcs.gc folder now exists.
I presume the SRV records you are referring to are the _msdcs, _sites, _tcp
and _udp folders directly underneath the dns zone? The msdcs.gc folder now
contains the IP address of the dc.
I ran dcdiag on the dc again and the results are:
C:\WINNT\Resource Kit>dcdiag

The only tests it seems to have a problem with are KnowsOfRoleHolders and
systemlog. I'd like to think I'm closer to repairing the damage to the dc.
What would you suggest at this point?
Thank you,
Brian.
