I did that (a formal DCPromo process) and it reported a successful
transition of data to the new DC to the new server at every step of the way.
And the new server is now working.
As an asside, the only hiccup was that the new DHCP server kept insisting on
using a weird Ip address and sub net every time I clicked on the "check"
button. Finally I jsut didn't ask it to check or verify and just use the
$#%##@@! IP's and subnet that I told it too. I have 192.168.168.200 to 254
and a subnet of 255.255.255.0 It kept insisting on a 192.168.0.0 and
255.255.0.0
My Symantec Corp. Antivirus is having trouble see the network clients even
though the DHCP leases look OK on the new server.... [sigh....] I don't
know if all of this is related or not.
Also, [while I'm on a roll] the Microsoft.NET is an issue.
Microsoft.NETdoes not show up on the software removal tool in the control
panel at all (I tried that to verify it's existence).
I tried to install the Microsoft.net SP1 and it gave me the following error
message:
"The Upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer because the
program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a
different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded
exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch"
To correct the baseline condition to support an upgrade to SP1, I downloaded
Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 Redistributable Package to install that
(apparently) missing component.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/thankyou.aspx?familyId=262D25E3-F589-4842-8157-034D1E7CF3A3&displayLang=en
I clicked on RUN and it replied with:
"The product you are trying to install has already been installed with your
operating system. Use Windows Update to Install the Latest Updates."
OK, so I then tried to install the SP 1 again it replied with the same error
message.
So I tried a reboot and the system hung mid-Windows 2003 bootup (software)
and I had to press F8 and reboot to the last known good configuration….
This is important because my MIRRA.COM server (for back-up) requires
Microsoft.NET to operate. My gut says to reinstall the OS, but my data would
not be backed up without it and my client profiles would be a distaster for
me If I had to spend 30-40 hours reloading software again (yup, no lie)...
That's why I embarked down this nutty path in th efirst place.
This would seem to be circular....
