I think you may have a keen sense of smell. The problem may be related to
"Slow Computer Browsing from Multihomed Clients"

because if I disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on one of the two network adapters
(one is VPN), then the problem goes away. I tried adding a third network
adapter, networked to another virtual machine, but that didn't make the
problem any worse, as I had hoped.
