I believe is he's using masquerading or mail aliases, that may be the issue,
since as you said his mail server is checking the sending domain's FQDN but
there's no host record for it. Here's something I found that talks about
Sendmail, but the issue is the same no matter what mail server:

If using Exchange, you can state your FQDN as a masquerading domain in SMTP
properties. If it's another mail server, check the docs.
