Yes but how does it know the IP for ns1.mydomain.com if it is not listed externally anywhere?
"It" knows because that was (if you did things properly) one of the two pieces of information that you gave to your registrar.
My registar http://www.netregistry.com.au/ only allows for the entry of "one" piece of information to delegate to a server - the host name.
Wrong. It requires two, as can be seen on the form that it requires you to fill in to do what you want to do.
