DNS/Exchange problem

I recently upgraded from WinNT4.0 domain to wk3 w/ad.
It is running in 2003 interim. There is only a simple
domain - mydomain.com. This domain name is the same as
our external name. (Our ISp has a zone file on their
server with host1.mydomain.com, host2.mydomain.com, etc.
resolving to our external class C addresses).
We have also upgraded from Exchange 5.5 to 2003. (Built
new server and migraded mailboxes, etc.)

I have 2 internal DC's behind a PIX firewall. They are
both running DNS and Wins. DNS zone mydomain.com is AD
integrated. I have a Winnt server running DNS outside of
the PIX which I was using as a forwarder before for the
inside servers for Internet resolution. We were having a
problem using the ISP NS's for Internet resolution, so I
change the forwarders on the 2 inside servers to a couple
of NS's that MS recommende to test with.

Clients on the inside can resolve internal and external
addressed with minimal problems.

We are having issues with mail. Sometime, and I mean
SOMETIMES, clients get undeliverable msgs back. It seems
the queries for mx records from the mail server don't come
back with valid mx ip's for the intended domain. Then the
next query returns an A record for the domain which
doesn't except mail.
This is becoming very confusing. We don't know if we have
a dns setup problem somewhere, or if it's a mail server
problem. I am not sure of the best sequence/tools for
testing this problem.
Suggestions would be appreciated.
