> both server and client can ping eachother, and tracert says there is no
router, there is a router connected to the switch but its not a dhcp server.
I have disconnected it and tried but it didn't make a difference.
Ping tells you nothing here. Disconnecting the router so that
clients and server are separate by nothing except a simple hub
would.
If you are using the word "switch" to mean a modern VLAN
or "router switch" chances are that is your problem.
If you "switch" is merely one of those 10/100 "multiport repeater"
hubs (misnamed by most of the vendors as "switch") then it
should not interfer.
Do you understand the meaning "broadcast domain"? Do you
know that Routers (or router switches) do NOT pass broadcasts
by default but that "bridges" (and layer 2 switches) as well as
"hubs" do pass broadcasts?
DHCP clients and servers muct be in the same "broadcast domain"
or you must take that special action I indicated previously.
Ping uses ROUTABLE IP so it will not tell you if DHCP will work
or not. Tracert will show the NUMBER of router hops so if you
have any between client and server you have that problem discussed
above.
