Your presumed question and your actual problem or real question
may be different.
In the subject, you ask about subdirectories but then you and Kevin
discussed the issue with DCs and bare domain name (no server tag
for the machine.)
The bare name is complicated by AD but the actual question in your
subject line (and maybe what you really want) is NOT a DNS problem,
although possibly it has a solution.
There is NO DNS method to specify subdirectories. You can however
have a web server or even a fairly trivial "web server stub" to send back
a "trivial" page that contains an HTML Redirect.
If you have a Web server on all of the machines which might receive the
request, just build the default document etc.
