Re: 64-bit, shared disk quorum cluster, iSCSI

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Thanks for the answer but that's not what I meant. Someone has told me that there are some "known issues" with iSCSI shared disk in 64 bit Windows. I can't get them to quote their sources, this is through our sales force. Based on my experience I'm not aware of any, and we've implemented iSCSI (software initiator) based quorum clusters before with great success, including on 64-bit Windows.

Since you would have probably told me if there was an issue with this arrangement, I'm assuming you're not aware of any .. which is actually reassuring to me.

You have to admit though, that the help file is a bit misleading. 1. it does not talk about iSCSI cases and 2. it states that a SQL cluster on 64-bit Windows can't do DAS SCSI .. only SAN via fibre. Makes me wonder how true statement 2. is.

Thanks .. I'd appreciate your comment, if you have time still

Can a typical, quorum based cluster built on 64-bit Windows 2003 use iSCSI with a software initiator for shared storage? I am interested in Windows requirements here (ie. assume that iSCSI target supports this arrangement).

Yes. Microsoft provides an iSCSI initiator that you can download and install on your potential cluster nodes. You will, of course, also need an iSCSI target.
