I would recommend looking into the functionality of the Cluster logs and the
Event logs. Monitoring solutions (like MOM / SCOM) are very also worthwhile
to investigate...
You didn't mention OS Version, but W2K and up has cluster logging enabled by
default already. There are different levels of detail, log size, etc...more

tips like
1. how to know when the failover occured
2. how to know from which node the failover transfered and from where
3. how to know the cause of the failover.
