Re: Clustering Question

The IIS machines can be Web Edition. The SQL Cluster would need to be
Enterprise or Data Center. SQL will need to Enterprise as well.

Thanks for the reply.

So if I understand you correctly one computer will need Windows Server
2003 Standard Edition (what about he Web Edition) and the other computer
will need Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition. Do both computer need
to have Sql installed and will the Sql Express Edition Work? Thanks for
the suggestion about going 64 Bit. and yes it will be .Net

Thanks,

Bryan

Web servers: Depends of your needs, Windows 2003 Web server edition would
do the job at a good price. IIS will do the web server part. Your website
is in .Net, isn't it ?

SQL Server: You can make a sql cluster with even the standard edition of
SQL 2005. After it depends if you need extra features. You still need
Windows 2003 enterprise to make an MSCS cluster.

As you are starting a new project with new infrastructure, i would go all
in 64 bit.

Thanks. As far as the Web server and Sql Server which software would be
need for both machines.

Thanks,

Bryan

To achieve High Availability, you would need:

2 ISP
2 routers (HSRP...)
2 Firewall
2 switches
2 Web servers (NLB)
2 SQL servers (MSCS cluster)

Thanks for the replies. I would like to mention a little more about
the project. This will be an online auction site that uses Sql Server
for the database. Would the NLB still work? Also what would be
needed (As far as software) to link 2 or more computers together so
they have redundancy and reliability and failsafe?

Thanks

You're likely looking at using NLB, not MSCS. You also won't need
Datacenter for NLB front-end servers. You could also cluster your
back-end data servers and use Datacenter there, if you chose to.

I have a website that will need high availability so I would like to
use clustering. I am not sure what is needed. Let say I am going to
have two servers running. I would like these servers to be clusted
together so if one fails the other one can sever the web traffic
without any notice to the user that one of the servers has gone down.
I am looking at Windows Server 2003 R2 Datacenter Edition. Does both
computers need to have Windows Server R2 Datacenter Edition or just
one with the second computer having some less expensive software?

Thanks,

Bryan Krossley
