If I understand you correctly, sharing the NAS with the NLB Web servers
will introduce more disk contention possibilities. Why are you doing this
anyway?
I'm not using NLB...the servers have a hardware load-balancer in front of
them. Because the servers are all mirrors of the same website, I had wanted
to keep the root website directory on the NAS so I didn't have to deal with
replicating changes across six servers every time the website content is
updated.
As for the traffic isolation, if you are using iSCSI, each clustered
server must have one or more network adapters or host bus adapters that
are dedicated to the cluster storage. The network you use for iSCSI cannot
be used for network communication.
I was originally going to use the NAS as a windows shared directory for the
webservers, but it appears that if I want to run MSCS and cluster the two
SQL servers, then I would be better off using the NAS for that. If I
understand you correctly, doing the latter would then preclude me from using
it from anything else? I think I understand that using iSCSI with the NAS
would require it to be isolated on its own network with just the SQL Servers
accessing it...assuming that's the only way to set up the cluster?

Performance questions really depend on the intended use, user load and
expectations for performance.

gotcha...here's my scenario. I have a 6 load-balanced webservers
(externally loadbalanced), with SQL2005 dB behind them. The dB servers
prolly will not be tasked very heavily (most of the time they are pretty
much idling), and I'm looking for high-availability primarily. This is
the only hardware on the subnet. The LB'd webservers are there to handle
infrequent traffic spikes (very infrequent).
I've been reading, reading, reading about clustering + iSCSI, and see
that it's recommended to isolate the NAS and clustered servers on their
own switch to isolate them from all other traffic. I can do that, but I
was hoping to allow the LB webservers to have access to the NAS as well.
Is that problematic?
If so, I can go the three-NIC configuration for the clustered SQL servers
(in other words, private NAS network, heartbeat, and public network with
webservers), but I was hoping to be able to share the NAS with the
webservers as well.
Any observations/recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
