Re: Newbie Cluster Questions (2000 AdvSrvr)

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Hi Meinolf;

The machine I'm interested in duplicating (clustering?) is a Domain
Controller that also has Exchange 2000 Enterprise on it. The idea is that I
could then work on one machine (updates, re-starts etc) without a service
interruption.

The two machines I have are old IBM Netfinity 7000 M10's. They are identical
(literally - the only difference between them is that one has a white floppy
drive and the other is black ;-)

Looking at IBM doc's from that timeframe seem to indicate that I need a
shared disk along with some cabling to connect both machines to this shared
disk. That I don't have - is that necessary? I was hoping that all I would
have to do is connect both machines via Ethernet and then add/remove
programs and install clustering? :-0)

Note: I'm hoping that the existing Exchange Server would not need to be
re-built from scratch (ie: Format/Re-Install). I'm hoping to 'duplicate'
that server.

Thanks for replying! I hope that helps to clarify things a little bit. I
really know nothing about clustering so it's entirely possible I'm way off
base with my understanding of things :-)

Best;
Dave

Hello Dave,

So you will cluster an Exchange server? Which Exchange version?

Best regards

Hi Folks;

I happen to have an extra server that's identical to an existing
exchange server and would like to try clustering (as I've never done
it and know nothing about it).

Both machines run Windows 2000 AdvSrvr and both have identical
internal Raid 5 arrays.

My hope is that clustering will allow me to take one machine off-line
without causing a service interruption.

Do I need any special hardware or anything? Does this sound like a
reasonable goal?

Thanks!
