Re: Attached Storage Configuration - Exchange

Answer to Edwin - Yes you are correct on the RAID setup. I have 6 of the
disks in a RAID 10 config, with the 7th set as a hot spare.

Thanks to both of you for responding. That gives me some ideas on setup.

One more question - either of you used the System Capacity Planner?? I am
thinking of recommending we purchase Technet Plus, so I can get a copy. I
never got a chance to look at the beta version, so I am not 100% on how
useful of a planning tool it is.

Thanks.

Agree with all, but one question for the OP.

How were you planning a RAID-10 configuration on 7 disks ?
you need a even number of disks for such a config.

Bottom line, I would follow John F's advice in presenting
disks/seperate-LUNs for your cluster, you don't want all your disks in a
RAID-10 config, you want to create seperate luns for each function as per
John's post

In regards to the 500MB minimum for the Quorum, this is set to 500MB because
this is an minimum "optimum" for NTFS. 500MB or 1GB is fine.

In regards to the MSDTC, yes, it is very common to put this in the Default
Cluster group using the Quorum disk.

You'll need a partition for the OS, and this is also likely where the page
file will reside. Your system temp directory resides on the OS drive by
default as well.

You'll need a shared LUN for the Quorum/MSDTC. Typically this is 1GB.

You'll need a shared LUN for the Logs for each storage group. The size of
the LUN really depends on how many transaction logs you're generating and
how frequently you do a full backup (which truncates the logs). Typical
sizes ae 10-50GB.

You'll need a shared LUN for each storage group's databases. This is
also
where the MSSearch service gather logs (for content indexing) are stored.
The first database drive is also the location of the message tracking logs
and the working directory (which is used for content conversion).

You'll need a shared LUN for the SMTP queue directory. If you don't put
it
on a shared LUN, each time you fail to the other node messages will be
stranded. The will mysteriously reappear some time later when you fail
back. In a pinch you can locate the SMTP queues on the database LUN (if
you
do this make sure you discard bad mail instead of saving it in the badmail
directory)

Hi Everyone,

I am in the process of designing the cluster, and want to correct some
mistakes I made on a previous exchange implementation.

Cluster is as follows:

7 * 73GB SAS in a RAID 10 config. This gives me approximately 200GB of
storage space. (I don't have the hardware\budget to buy more hard drives
and
make a RAID 1 config, etc, so everything will go on the RAID 10 setup).

I am at a loss as to how to configure the space for the cluster. I was
looking for recommended storage space for the Quorum, but can only find
the
recommended minimum of 500MB. Understand from previous posts that the
MSDTC
should also reside on this drive.

For an Exchange Store that is hitting 115GB (I know...we have to shrink
it
down some...will be implementing quotas as well) how should I config the
remaining space??

Anyway, any help would be appreciated.
