I'm trying to build a two node NLB cluster for intranet use only with windows
2003 Server Std. I'm using new IBM xSeries 346 boxes and their two internal
NICs. They are both Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet NICs with driver
version 8.48.0.0 10/31/2005.

Once NIC on each service is connected to the other server as a heartbeat
with a crossover cable and the connection is good.

This is an improper configuration for NLB. All intra-node communications for NLB clusters travel across the NLB'd NICs.

The reason that people add a second NIC to NLB'd servers is to have a means of directly connecting to a single node for management purposes. For example, to patch a node.

I launched nlbmgr.exe on the 1st node and right clicked and selected new
cluster and entered the cluster server (virtual) name with the domain and the
Cluster virtual IP address and Subnet Mask. I've tried both Unicast and
Multicast modes. I didn't add an additiona cluster IP.

Yeah... that is kind of a requirement. You must have an NLB cluster IP address.

I used the default port settings. I selected the 1st node, connected to it
and selected the NIC connected to the LAN. I left the priority at 1, entered
the IP of the node and subnet mask. Left the state to Started.

Did you change the priority on the second node to another number besides "1" so they can talk?
