Hi,
I am trying to find if the windows server 2003 provide the support for
application failover rather than the node failover?
I guess it all depends on your definition. If you have a cluster aware application, the resource checks will test its health. In the event of failure of the application, it will be failed over to a healthy node if one is available.
I would like to switch to another node in the cluster if the application
stops responding or killed. I understand that the node failures are being
handled by the microsoft windows server 2003 enterprise edition.
Both application failures (tested through resource checks) and node failures are handled by the Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition cluster service once it is properly configured.
If the application failover is supported, then do we need to build any thing
in the application to enable this feature?
That depends on the application and the application vendor. Is the application cluster aware? If not, you can configure your own resource checks using generic scripts of you can build your own monitoring service and use scripts to cause the failover.
What are the steps required to register the application to enable the
failover when the node is still active?
Right-click on the cluster group and select Move.
I understand that Windows server standard edition is not compatible for this
clustering technology.
That is correct.
Does the cluster concept comes pacakged with the enterprise edition without
any separate licence?
MSCS, also known as server clustering, is part of the Enterprise version of Windows Server 2003.
