Dear Ramon,
Thanks for the email. Yes all your questions which you have specifed below
are already in my mind. The vendor is HP and everything is compatible.
Windows 2003 enterprise is the O/S. Server, HBA and SAN are in the
compatibility HCL of MSft.
So correct me if i am wrong while following the steps:-
Install O/s on both servers. Both HW are identical and pointing to the SAN
storage.
Install Cluster service on both servers.
Configure first node
Configure the second node and add it to the cluster
Use the File Server Migration Tool to migrate the data from the standalone
server to the cluster.

Dear Haroon,.
Although in the past I have always created my own migration scripts, I havr
to admit that the FSMK is a great help for most of the current scenarios.
FSMK also accepts MSCS Shares as both source and target, so you are covered
here and it also optimizes the number of Share4s in the cluster:
See Pag 7 of FSMK Overview whitepaper:
[...]
the File Server Migration Wizard provides an option to optimize cluster
resources so that only the parent folder of the migrated folders is shared
as a File Share resource.
[...]
Just one caveat:
If you are using Local groups in your current File servers for setting NTFS
permissions, FSMK will not migrate the groups and the permissions for you.
In this scenario (Local groups), I have used in the past SecureCopy (3.x)
many times with great success. Now, it is available in version 4.07:

Dear Ramon,
One more question. I will be migrating all the data from an existing file
server to the cluster using the Microsoft Fil Server Migration toolkit.
How
would the sharing of the folders get affected, as i know that on a cluster
environment to create highly available file shares on a cluster, you
should
create them using Cluster Administrator and not Windows Explorer.

Hi Haaron,
Some questions you have to answer yourself before.
Supportability related:
1.- Is your hardware (both servers should be identical) in the HCL for
Cluster in MSFT?
2.- Is the whole Servers+HBA+SAN in the HCL of MSFT and compatibility
matrix
of your SAN vendor?
3.- Do you have Windows 2003 R2 Standard or Enterprise? You will need to
upgrade to Enterprise for MSCS
Also, High Availability is more than Clustering...it is about making
highly
available every piece of the chain
How many HBA's a re you using? Do you plan Multipath solutions?
How many NIC are you using and how is your network backbone in terms of
HA?
Is your hardware resillient enough (redundant fans, hot plug memories and
CPU, etc)?

Dear All,
I have 2 servers which i want to use as File Servers on Windows 2003
R2.
These both servers will be connected to SAN storage. I want to
implement
clustered file share on both servers for high availability.
Can anyone guide me on an article or a guide on how to do this step by
step.
Help will be much appreciated.
