We plan to implement MS Cluster Service based on Windows Server 2003
Enterprise. 2 nodes will be based on Dell PowerEdge 1950 h/w, with Shared
Storage based on PowerVault 220S with Dell PERC4eDC controllers on both
nodes.
I planned to set RAID1 (2 HDs) for Quorum disk on PowerVault 220S. However
Dell engineer told me that Quorum has to reside on Physical HD, RAID is
not
supported, and if I have RAID1 implemented for Quorum, and one of the
drives
fails, than Cluster will fail. He also said that PowerVault 220S does not
support this configuration.
If the 220S does not support RAID1, then get rid of it. Your SAN device can
create RAID1, RAID5, and whatever - the key is that the SAN presents to
Windows a single basic disk, which it will.
I don't know anything about the 220S so I can't comment on it.
1. Is Quorum on hardware RAID1 supported (by Microsoft?)
So long as it is presented to Windows (from the SAN) as a basic disk.
2. Any experience with PowerVault 220S?
3. Any suggestions on Shared Storage H/W that will support this
configuration (no SAN, please)?
You should review the Windows Catalog and check the Clustering list for
approved hardware configurations.
