Obviously I work for a software vendor, so I will descrive how we would
address the solution with LifeKeeper. We are hardware and software
independent, so any combination of servers (physical or virtual) and
storage will do. The storage needs to present itself as a local drive,
so iSCSI is necessary if you plan to use NAS.
We can run on Windows Standard or Enterprise, so unless you plan on
going beyond 4 GB of memory, you can save money on the OS by going with
Standard edition of Windows. Assuming you want 3 two node clusters
locally and then a single server in the DR site, you will need 7 copies
of LifeKeeper Protection Suite. Request an official quote from our
website, but you are probably in the $20k range.
Basically, we would replicate from your primary servers to the
secondary servers. We would also replicate to your DR server in you
recovery site. While replicating across the WAN, it is important to
size the connection appropriately. Basically we would have you collect
the disk write bytes/sec over a period of time to get an idea of your
rate of change. We could then recommend a WAN link for you. For
example, a T1 can handle ~650 MB worth of change per hour while still
keeping a realtime ASYNC mirror. A DS3 can handle ~17 GB worth of
change per hour and still keep in sync.
As far as monitoring the application and email server, you would use
our Generic Aplication Recovery kit to monitor and recover the
applications. We have an IIS recovery kit, so if your website is
running on IIS you would use our IIS recovery kit.
Contact us via www.steeleye.com and we would be glad to discuss this
further.

If I understand you correctly, you will have a total of 6 servers
locally (3 two node clusters?) and want to have a single server in the
DR site be the 3rd node for each of the 2 node clusters?
Actually at this point it is a plan
I have just replaced the web server with a DL380g4 dual 3gig processors with
4 gig mem.
The guys upstairs decided they don't like things NOT working. it took about
a week to restore everything. (horror story left out)
I will use the same hardware for all other servers I hope.
Email server is NOT exchange
Application server is nonexistent at this point
What type of storage are you using locally? What are you using forØ data replication to the DR site?
At this point storage is local. I have been looking at nfs/nas from
cybernetics.com named misan for local storage and hope to get another for
remote and let them replicate over the net.
Ø
Ø Do you believe your single server and
storage in the DR Site is powerful enough to handle email, website andØ applications?
I expect it to be slow but usable
Ø
Ø Is the solution you are considering listed on the
Microsoft Geographically Dispersed Cluster Solution web site?No
If you are considering third party solutions, what I have implementedØ Edition to support clustering.
for customers in your situation is a VMWARE ESX server in the DR site
and use LifeKeper Data Replication to replicate the application data to
the VM's in the DR site. The two local nodes can either be attached to
shared storage or be pure replication with no shared storage. Because
we do not use MSCS, your OS and Applications do not need the Enterprise
What would this cost? I'll let you do the dirty work.
