Re: Shutting down guests in VS hosted on physical cluster

"The usual way". Shut down guest O/S as though a normal machine. Cluster
service (by way of the havm.vbs script) detects this as a "failure" so
brings the resource back online, is what I'm guessing happens.

I've now 95% written a script to deal with it, but it's interesting that
no-one else seems to have mentioned or related to the issue...

How are you shutting down the guest? I have never had this issue.

The guide to clustering a VM is very useful and works well, however, I
find that I can't actually shutdown a guest without the cluster service
automatically restarting it! I know this is primarily "by design",
however there are bound to be occassions when you wish to perform
maintenance on a guest with it offline (i.e. adding disks / NICs etc.)

At the moment, I'm manually shutting down the guest, and then watching
for the moment it's "off" and taking the resource offline in cluster
admin.

Can anyone suggest a better way of managing it, probably via a script?

I thought about using the VS scripting interface to shutdown the guest,
then stop the resource, but I think the shutting down of the guest via VB
returns immediately (rather than waiting for the shutdown to complete,
then processing the next line) so the resource will have been taken
offline by the script before the guest gets to complete its own shutdown.

Any suggestions / pointers to scripts would be really appreciated.

Paul
